“All at once, summer collapsed into fall” - Oscar Wilde
All of a sudden, it feels like any glimpse of late summer has finally made its departure. I held out hope of a triumphant return of the warm rays, perhaps misled by how early October was last year. But quietly, the weather is slipping into cooler and cooler temperatures. I’m not sad, not really. I think at one point in our lives, we start seeing how quickly time travels, and it feels jarring to see summer teetering off into the distance as we speed into autumn.
I’ve felt the season changing this week suddenly: there are no more blackberries to pick, the mornings feel darker, the sun is fleeting in its warmth, and, well, my autumn harvest vegetables are coming through thick and fast.
I cannot begin to explain how ridiculously exciting I’ve found picking runner beans and pulling up carrots. It has made me start meticulously planning what to grow next year, that’s the great thing about the garden. No matter what time of year it is, there’s always something to start planning or to take care of. It really helps you to make the most of the seasons and stop wishing them to pass by so quickly.
Seeing the days blend into a more autumnal setting has seen me pick up some classically seasonal habits: reading in every free moment, baking all of the cakes, and returning to writing. None of it was entirely intentional, it’s almost like somewhere deep in my body, there’s a switch that just flips, and I fall into my autumnal place once again. I’m ready to hopelessly fall into this season.

A great reminder that you can still burnout doing what you love
Everyone should know about this Creamy Sundried Tomato and Butter Bean recipe, it’s been on my weekly rotation for a while. So good
My copy of Intermezzo* turned up this week. I’m 50 pages in, and I’m already in awe
This article caught my eye this week: how the Thinocracy bit back
On the autumnal note; as it is finally here, I’ve become somewhat obsessed with this incense burner (also, these incense cones)
Entertaining bits
Watch: Romcoms are not typically my thing, I find them wildly predictable and, in turn, a bit of a bore to watch. But my childhood crush (Seth Cohen, obviously) is turning up in a new series on Netflix. I had to give it a go, right? Nobody Wants This with Kristen Bell and Adam Brody is a 10/10 hit. Great dialogue, side characters worth caring about, and a unique point of view. It’s SO good; I watched it all in two sittings. No regrets.
Read: I held out for a long time before getting a Kindle, but after becoming a little tired of wanting to read after I’d turned the lights out this summer, I caved. With the new Kindle came a few free months of Unlimited. To be honest, I didn’t find a lot on there to read, mostly because I think it takes the algorithms a while to figure you out. But, I saw a book that sounded up my street this week, and I’m so chuffed I picked it up. When We Were Innocent by Ella Berman explores the intricate lives of the last summer after graduation of a teenage group of girls. It could have easily been a typical thriller style, but instead spends time on the deeper emotions behind teenage girls.
Watch: - Back to watch, I didn’t listen to anything of note this week. But I did watch a new film that I’ve been excited to watch - His Three Daughters. I was drawn in by the cast; Natasha Lyonne, Carrie Coon & Elizabeth Olsen. It was so much better than I could have anticipated, it was a sentimental retelling of three estranged sisters who have come together to care for their sick father. I’ve always had a huge admiration for films set in one place; it feels like it gives a bigger nod to how captivating the screenplay has to be and how charismatic the actors must come across. This film nailed that, and the cinematography, despite being in a small apartment was stunning. Worth watching on Netflix this coming week if you haven’t already.
One last thing
I started putting some bits and pieces from here in bite-size over on TikTok - can’t help but find a little way to include a bit of creative design.
Hopefully, you enjoyed this post, if you did it would mean the world if you could share or restack it. Thank you!
Have a lovely Sunday, Allie ☁️
I feel like all of us in the 'autumn begins on 22 September 2024' this year camp had trouble actually getting into the season on that date! But I'm loving the crisp chill and all of the cosy clothes now. We're harvesting more and more apples, and baking more and more crumbles!
And, omg, I've never looked back since buying a Kindle last year. I was such a paperbacks-only girlie, but the Kindle is undeniably practical and makes me read so much faster?
